Victor Voskovsky, Good Samaritan

Northfield, Ill - We offer our prayers of thanksgiving for Good Samaritans everywhere, especially Victor Voskovsky. On Monday at 11:30 p.m. a man was trapped and submerged in an overturned sport-utility vehicle that landed in waist-deep water in a forest preserve. Victor came to his rescue by diving into muddy water.

Police say that vehicle and another car crashed around 11:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes. The guardrail was left bent from the impact showed where the SUV landed in the ditch near the Skokie Lagoons.

Victor Voskovsky happened to be driving by at the time, and rushed to the rescue.

Basically, I was driving, and then I saw something was going on, so I stopped and I pulled over to the curb, and a car was flipped, so I ran to the water really quick, and the door was closed on the left side because it was underwater in the mud, Voskovsky said.

Victor rushed to pull the man out, and 30 seconds later, he said a Wilmette police officer arrived to help in the rescue. He was underwater for at least five minutes, Voskovsky said. The officer administered CPR, and the man was taken away on a stretcher.

Lord, thank you for sending Good Samaritans in our lives and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which prompt all the good that they do. Thank for all your blessings especially the strangers in our lives, who assist us daily as your Apostles of Mercy. May all the good they do come back to rest on them one hundred fold.

Army Lt . Col. Robert Bateman

Washington, DC - As we celebrate Memorial Day weekend, let us pray for the 1,042 soldiers, Marines, sailors and Air Force personnel in the last 12 months who have given their lives in the terrible duty that is war. Thousands more have come home on stretchers, horribly wounded and facing months or years in military hospitals.

We thank God for Army Lt. Col. Robert Bateman, who recently completed a year long tour of duty in Iraq. We remember all veterans living and deceased that we hold dear in our hearts. They remind us of the applause owed them for protecting our rights and freedom with their life breath and broken limbs.

Each Friday morning for the last four years, along a long sacred corridor at the Pentagon, the wounded and returning veterans process. Their wheel-chairs make their way amidst the applause of friends, family and Pentagon staff. The applause lasts for 24 minutes as our valiant men and women pass by. Their courage and fortitude punctuate this parade with the dignity owed heros and decorated servants of their country.

Joseph Galloway writes: "They pass down this corridor of officers and applause, and then meet for a private lunch, at which they are the guests of honor, hosted by the generals. Some are wheeled along. Some insist upon getting out of their chairs, to march as best they can with their chin held up, down this hallway, through this most unique audience. Some are catching handshakes and smiling like a politician at a Fourth of July parade. More than a couple of them seem amazed and are smiling shyly."

Lord, bless all veterans and their families this day. Let them know our love and appreciation by the consolation of your presence in their lives. Thank you for their witness which so speaks of your love for us and for our neighbors. We are forever grateful.

Let us remember to pray each Friday for this sacred parade of soldiers, ever in our prayers and reverenced in our hearts.

Charles Duffner, Age 34, Springfield, MA

SPRINGFIELD, MA A 34-year-old Springfield man remains in critical condition early Friday after a hit-and-run crash on Edwards Avenue earlier this week.

Charles Duffner, of 1782 Edwards Ave., was struck just before 4 p.m. Wednesday while standing near the south curb across the street from his home, said Sgt. Scott Woodruff of the Springfield Police Division.

Its unknown whether it was intentional because we were unable to speak with the victim, Woodruff said.

Duffner suffered head trauma and was flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital after the incident.

Lord, we pray for Charles and all those recovering from unexpected traumas this day. Send down your healing mercy and love on the victims and all their families. Lord, we thank you for the power of your risen presence in our lives. Continue to send your healing love and mercy to all those in need and help us to be witnesses of your love and mercy to others.

Lord, turn all that we experience this day into good for your glory and honor.

Carma Isha , Age 58, Homemaker and Mother

Cairo, Egypt - We pray in solidarity with Carma Isha age 58, homemaker and Mother for the religious freedom for all women and children during this time of political upheaval. We pray for all children that they may be safe in their homes and churches throughout the world, especially in the Middle East.

Hundreds of Coptic Christians took to the streets in Cairo on Monday to protest recent Muslim-Christian clashes that left a dozen dead and a church badly damaged.

By sunset, about a thousand demonstrators had gathered outside the headquarters of Egypts state-run TV building, a familiar backdrop of revolutionary protests, to criticize the Egyptian armys handling of the weekend clashes and to demand international intervention.

About three dozen riot police stood waiting nearby as the crowd grew increasingly agitated, chanting, "We want our kidnapped girls," a reference to rumors that Coptic women had been held against their will by those who want to convert them to Islam.

They burn our churches, they kill our sons and kidnap our daughters. We want our rights in this country, we want our children back, said Carma Isha, 58, a homemaker, as she stood amid the crowd late Monday.

We call on all Churches to send apostles of Mercy into war torn countries to support the religious freedom of all families, peoples and religions. We ask all churches to use their resources to create underground networks to protect and provide for the basic needs of all peoples facing terrorism and life-threatening situations due to political unrest and unresolved human rights issues.

Let us provide a spiritual catacomb of prayer to beg the Holy Spirit's intervention like during the time of the early Christians. We ask all mothers to form an army of prayer and spiritual protection to conquer evil with good. Let us all intervene where ever abuse of human rights exist. Let us conquer evil with good, one prayer at a time and one good deed at a time.
