Bishop Akio Johnson, Age 32. Southern Sudan

Southern Sudan, Africa - Join us in prayer as we pray for the world's newest nation, Southern Sudan. After 22 years of war, approximately 2.5 million people killed and 4 million displaced persons, Southern Sudan is officially the newest nation in the world.

Today Christian refugees trickle south to their homeland carrying hope, but little in the way of expertise and tools. The over 20 years as displaced pilgrims and hand to mouth existence in the camps have left few equipped with the necessary skills to survive. They have no tools of their own. They fled to the camps with what they could carry. Anything of value has been traded long ago. Their merger possessions consisted of a welcome pack made up of several plastic bowls, 2 blankets and a bag of rice.

Bishop Akio Johnson, age 52, of Torit shares with us the next aim for the country and the church is to build a fledgling country from scratch. It is true: there are a lot of challenges to face but we are not downhearted. We know that God always stays with his people. He invites all of us to support his people with prayer and resources as the church builds programs for their faith formation, catholic education and income generation projects such as small farms. My most urgent priority is the spiritual renewal of people. During the time of war, people were Christian because they were against the oppressors. I want people to be Christian through conviction.

Lord, help us live our Christian convictions in thought, word and deed. Hear our prayers for the people of South Sudan as they begin a new life in Christian solidarity. Remember the sick, the poor, the dying and the homeless as they journey in faith. Come to their assistance and bless those who help them start again. Lord, protect your people and in your Divine providence grant them an everlasting peace, which the world cannot give.

Engaged Couple Shot in Philadelphia, PA

PHILADELPHIA, PA One man was killed and two others, an engaged couple, were critically injured in a shooting in North Philadelphia early Tuesday morning. When officers arrived at the scene, they found three people laying in the street suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 19-year-old male was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. God grant him eternal rest.

A 31-year-old and 33-year-old male and female who were engaged to be married suffered gunshot wounds to their torsos. They were also taken to Einstein where they are listed in critical condition.

Investigators believe the shootings may have been an act of retaliation. This started out as a neighborhood fight and dispute, which escalated into a shooting, which turned into a homicide, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Small said police are searching for three males who fled the scene in a white Pontiac Grand Prix.

Lord, so many souls need your prayers, who remain nameless and forgotten, victims of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Please Lord use your Divine Providence, Protection and Deliverance to save those in harms way. Stop violence before it begins by inspiring souls to respond to the gifts of your Holy Spirit. Where there is hatred sow love; where there is anger and unforgivness sow the seeds of reconciliation; where there is division plant the desire for unity and peace.

Join us in prayer for all souls who are in critical condition because of July 4th celebrations. May the Lord come to their assistance and bless their families with His mercy and healing.
