Tseung Kwan, Age 12, Hong Kong

Hong Kong - A 12-year-old girl, who is believed to have jumped from the second floor of her school was in a critical condition last night after an emergency operation on her spine. It is believed Tseung Kwan, surnamed Kwan, was scolded by her mother the night before. She is a Form One pupil at King Ling College on Lam Shing Road in Hong Kong.

School principal Yeung Ming-lun said students found Kwan sprawled on the ground near a staircase at 7.20 am yesterday. Yeung suspects she may have jumped from the second floor though he could not verify any details.

Kwan was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by the deputy principal and admitted to the Pediatrics Department ICU wing. She had an emergency operation and is recovering.

Lord, we pray for the complete recovery spiritually and physcially of Tseung Kwan. Protect all families from violence and accidents due to poor communication and lack of understanding. Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, may your wisdom and grace bless all families as they strive to find positive solutions to recurring problems. Through the intercession of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph we pray ....

Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik

Homs, Syria, Ash Wednesday 2012 - The death and destruction of the year long Syrian conflict have left an unending list of casualties and wounded. This worn torn country reminds us that nations as well as individuals can be reduced to ashes with a bleak future ahead for all, unless all repent of killing and violence.

Pleading for the living, are two French journalists wounded in the attack in Homs, Syria that killed Sunday Times reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Rmi Ochlik. Edith Bouvier, a reporter for the Le Figaro newspaper, and Paul Conroy, a freelance photographer, asked that Bouvier be allowed to leave the city of Homs, where the attack occurred. An appeal has been made to the French government and Red Cross to evacuate them.

Jean-Pierre Perrin, a journalist for the Paris-based Liberation newspaper who had been with the group in Homs last week, told London's Telegraph that Syrian forces had threatened to kill journalists there. "A few days ago we were advised to leave the city urgently and we were told: 'If they find you they will kill you,'" Perrin said. "I then left the city with the journalist from the Sunday Times but then Marie wanted to go back when she saw that the major offensive had not yet taken place."

Perrin said he was told the Syrian Army "issued orders to 'kill any journalist that set foot on Syrian soil.'"

Colvin's last words in her final interview before her death was that threats against civilians by the Syrian government were becoming serious. "It's a complete and utter lie they're only going after terrorists," Colvin said. "The Syrian Army is simply shelling a city of cold, starving civilians."

Let us pray for all those involved in this horrific conflict. Lord, grant eternal rest to the dead, prompt medical treatment for the wounded and divine protection for the people of Syria, especially all women and children.
Thank you Lord, for your promise of salvation and the gift of resurrection for all your faithful. Into your hands we commend their spirit and the destiny of their family and country.

MaryAnn and Daughter Sweet Pea

Washington, DC - MaryAnn's fate and her daughter Sweet Pea's future are in the hands of lawmakers in Washington. The Violence Against Women Act is up for vote. Please pray for and contact your congressional representatives so this much needed Bill may be passed soon. It provides for aid and resources for women who are abused and marginalized.

Make a difference! Pray and act on behalf of women everywhere. Promote the rights of women and support the help they need. Love begins with respect and kindness. Reach out to women everywhere.

'Womens rights' is a broad term used to describe a very serious global problem. Millions of women throughout the world are deprived of, or suffer attacks against their fundamental human rights for no reason other than that they are women. These rights include access to food, shelter, health care, education and employment. Women in both developing and developed nations face forms of discrimination, violence, sexual abuse, torture and political oppression. All of these actions stem from a mentality that women are somehow inferior.

Women's rights are abused in many countries around the world and this abuse can take many different forms. Abuse happens to the poor and the rich alike. It knows no boundaries.

In war-torn countries such as Sierra Leone, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Afghanistan, women are frequently at risk of being raped or sexually abused by soldiers. Even though sexual violence was outlawed in 2006, action is rarely taken against security forces, and violence against women is coming to be seen as a normal behaviour in society.

Domestic violence against women is a major issue in Pakistan, South Africa, Peru, Russia and Uzbekistan. Governments either refuse to intervene to protect women, or punish their attackers in a haphazard way that also makes women feel culpable for the violence. According to Amnesty International, 1 in 3 women were beaten or sexually abused world wide in 2006.

John of Fortworth, TX and Jean from LA

LOS ANGELES, CA For John and Jean the war in Iraq is over, but they and so many American soldiers are returning home to face a new battle unemployment.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics says unemployment rates for veterans ages 20 to 24 are close to 30 percent nearly double that of their young civilian counterparts. One issue is that many soldiers begin their service right out of high school. Groups such as Volunteers of America, an organization based near Skid Row, are helping Vets who lack the education needed to be competitive in the current workforce.

Last month Californias overall unemployment rate dropped to 11.3 percent. Still, many troops returning from Iraq plan to reenlist simply because there are too few jobs to come home to.

Lord, guide and protect our troops as they return home. Provide the necessary resources and support they need to resume their life.

Lord, thank you for all our veterans who have given so much for our freedom. Grant them special graces and blessings for their service. Help us to be generous to all those in need because of unemployment or drastic changes in life-style. Continue to be a comfort to the jobless, the homeless, and to those who have been marginalized because of poverty.

Lord, please help us to assist all those in need during this economic downturn. Lord, be generous so we can be generous as a Nation, as a government and as individuals.

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv

Jerusalem - Thousands of people have gathered at the Western Wall to pray for the health of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, considered the leader of the Ashekanzic Orthodox community worldwide. They are joined by thousands more in yeshivas and synagogues around the country. Dozens gather outside Rabbi Elyashiv's room in Shaare Tzedek Hospital, keeping a vigil over the aged sage and praying for his recovery.

The 101-year-old rabbi was hospitalized on Sunday after he felt ill. When he was taken to the hospital he was suffering from shortness of breath and low blood pressure. His lungs were cleared of some liquids that had gathered there. A crisis developed on Monday evening, his condition has deteriorated rapidly and is defined as critical.

Lord, we thank you for the life and ministry of Rabbi Elyashiv, which has touched so many lives. May your light and wisdom continue to guide him and all those who pray for him at this critical time. May your perfect will be done as we journey in you.

Lord, continue to raise up wise and gifted servants of your wisdom and love to lead all faiths to unity and peace in you.

Vinko Cardinal Pujic

Bosnia-Herzegovina - Archbishop Vinko Cardinal Pujic demands that Catholics should be treated equally. This demand was expressed by the Archbishop of Sarajevo, during a visit to the international headquarters of the Catholic Pastoral Charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). He demanded equal treatment for Catholics in the employment market, in schools and in other spheres of social life.

"Catholics are systematically disadvantaged", he reported. "The aim of this persecution is to persuade them to leave the country." Church lands and buildings that were confiscated during the period of Communism have not been returned, and building approvals for churches are subjected to years of delay. The government has no interest in giving the Catholic Church back its property. Muslim property has been returned, however.

Let us pray for all Churches and peoples suffering persecution because of their faith:

Lord, we pray for Divine protection, intervention and deliverance for all those suffering from a lack of human rights, especially religious freedom. Encourage and console all those suffering this day and triumph by your Spirit and Light that all peoples may live in freedom.
