Thanksgiving: A State of Mind

Washington DC - Thanksgiving is much more than a national holiday of gratitude; it is a time to remember the less fortunate. 3.5 million people experience homelessness in the United States each year. 35 per cent have children, 23 percent are military veterans, 25 per cent are children under 18, 35 percent have experienced domestic violence and 20-25 percent suffer from mental illness.

Let us pray for those who need affordable housing, are unemployed or have a low income, suffer from cuts in Federal assistance and social service programs or have long term health issues or addictions. Thanksgiving is a state of mind. Let us be generous in heart, mind and awareness. All we have belongs to God; let us use our resources for the good of others. Let us celebrate goodness each day by being generous and thankful. Let us be there for others in prayer, fasting and almsgiving this Thanksgiving.

Mission Opportunities in Your Neighborhood

Billy Graham Ministries 2013 - "Whats your idea of the average American community? White picket fences, manicured lawns, and two cars in the garage? The real America is not so picturesque, and it underscores the urgency of our work as Christians. If you live in a typical community with 100 average neighbors heres the reality: 7 are suffering from depression; 14 are crippled with fear and anxiety; 7 abuse substances; 3 are grieving over the loss of a loved one; 8 are struggling with the loss of a job and 60 don't profess to be born again."

Billy Graham Ministries are encouraging everyone to get involved in bringing the Gospel into their local communities. Evangelization begins with individuals at home and in the work place and spreads to communities and nations all over the world. To find out how to get more involved check out the work being done at www.myhopewithbilly graham.org. Be a source of hope in your community; get involved. You can make a difference.

Don't forget the hungry, needy and homeless this Thanksgiving, as well as worldwide mission outreaches in such places as the Philippines, the Sudan, Refugees in the Middle East and India. Your time, talent and treasure are very important to so many. Thank you in advance for being so generous.

Luke Murphy Wounded Warrior

Wounded Warrior Project 2013 - Chances are good youve never met anyone quite like Luke Murphy. And hes proud of the things that set him apart.

I always wanted one, Luke says of his Purple Heart medal, but not like this!

The retired Army infantry staff sergeant sacrificed his right leg above the knee in 2006 following an improvised explosive device detonating next to his vehicle.

Im proud of my Purple Heart, he says. I dont wear it on my shirt, but its displayed in my office.

Through nearly a year of hospitalization and 28 surgeries, Luke has remained focused squarely on the positive. Youve heard it all before, he says, its not what you cant do, its what you can do. Luke found inspiration in a backpack he received from Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) following his injury. The backpack came with comfort items to help Luke immediately, but it also came with some long-term benefits.

After a couple of years I realized the backpack was an unlimited source of knowledge, and tools to overcome anything and be successful, Luke says today. The knowledge and tools Luke refers to are the programs WWP offers to the current generation of injured service members.

"My biggest fear while on my back in the hospital bed was I would not be able to do the things I loved anymore, says Luke, an avid outdoorsman. But WWP got me involved in some outdoors events and they showed me otherwise."

Luke recently graduated from Florida State University and is active as a motivational speaker. I speak about overcoming adversity, he says, about leadership, and about the power of having a positive attitude. Im not the first to go through hard times, but I have done it well. Some people find it inspirational.

Lord, we thank you for all Wounded Warriors like Luke Murphy. They are a source of inspiration and hope to so many. Continue to bless all those involved in the Wounded Warrior Project. Bless them with ever increasing faith, hope and charity as they continue to bless others with their inspirational witness. All glory, honor, praise and thanksgiving forever more! Amen
