Four Firefighters Injured in Kentucky

Campbellsville, Kentucky - An ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went terribly wrong when four firefighters were seriously injured after participating in a group event, according to Campbellsville Police Chief Tim Hazlette.

Electricity from a power line shocked the firefighters after they had sprayed water on students.

After the water spray ended, the students left and the firefighters began moving back the ladder, according to Hazlette. This is when the bucket at the top of the ladder came close enough to power lines to shock the firefighters with electricity. There were two men inside the bucket and two on the ground.

Captain Tony Grider, 41, and firefighter Simon Quinn, 22, were inside the bucket. They were taken to Taylor Regional Hospital and then transferred to the University of Louisville Medical Center Burn Unit.

"One is in critical condition, the other is fair. Both have been admitted to the hospital's Level 1 burn unit," said Kentucky One Health spokesperson, David McArthur.

Two other firefighters, Captain Steve Marrs, 37, and Alex Johnson, 28, received electric shocks when they tried to lower the bucket and an electric current traveled down the extended ladder, said Hazlette.

Lord, please bless all firefighters who serve us and risk their lives each day, especially those involved in this accident. Through your healing presence bless them with a quick recovery. Protect all public servants and guard their service of those in most need.

Mary, Queen of Heaven, intercede for all our needs and protect our loved ones with your prayers. Amen

The Bergoglio's Family

Cordoba, Argentina - A car crash in Argentina killed three members of Pope Francis extended family including his 8-month-old, 2-year-old grand-nephews and their mother Valeria Carmona.

A truck struck a car driven by the Pope's nephew Emanuel Horacio Bergoglio on a highway in Cordoba at about 12:30 a.m., Cordoba police spokeswoman Carina Ferreyra said.

Emanuel Bergoglio's sons Jose Bergoglio, 8 months, and Antonio Bergoglio, age 2 and his wife and the boys' mother, Valeria Carmona, 36, died, police said.

Emanuel Bergoglio was taken to a hospital in Cordoba, where he was in critical condition Tuesday morning, Ferreyra said.

"Pope Francis is deeply hurt by news of the crash," a Vatican spokesman said Tuesday.

"The Pope has been informed of the tragic accident that took place in Argentina involving some of his family members," the Rev. Federico Lombardi said. "He is deeply hurt. He asks to all of those who participate in his sorrow to be with him in prayers."

Let us pray for Emanuel, the deceased members of his family and all those suffering from loss because of accidents. May God send healing to their families and eternal rest to all those who have died today.

"Hail Mary full of grace, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen"

Refugees in Iraq and the Middle East

Iraq - Let us pray for Refugees in Iraq and for the establishment of a world-wide army of good Samaritans to provide humanitarian relief to displaced Christians in the Middle East.

Lord, bless the efforts of all relief efforts in the Middle East such as Samaritan's Purse.

Samaritans Purse is a relief organization responding to the growing humanitarian crisis in Iraq by providing shelter, food, clothing, and more to families displaced by horrific violence.

More than 1 million people have fled their homes in Iraq this year, most recently in the wake of the rise of a militant Islamist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. After gaining control of cities and towns from Syria to Iraq, they are threatening Christians and other religious minorities with death.

Samaritans Purse is providing tents for families fleeing from Islamic militants.
Samaritans Purse and other relief agencies through local partner relief agencies, have recently set up hundreds of tents for displaced families fleeing to Erbil.

In addition to shelter, Samaritans Purse has provided 2,200 mattresses, along with 300 sets of baby/childrens clothes and 2,000 pairs of shoes. Infant beds have been distributed as well, to protect babies from biting insects and marginal health conditions.

Recently Samaritans Purse has also provided food for more than 14,000 people. They have been offering food assistance to 800 displaced families each month since late June. They have been a constant relief presence in in the Kurdish region of Iraq since 2007.

Please pray for a peaceful political solution, transition and an end to the violence in Iraq. Pray for the protection of Christians and others who are being threatened with death. Pray for many to be saved through the work of Samaritans Purse and our relief agencies.

Please help all refugee relief efforts with your prayers and resources. The level of religious persecution in the Middle East exceeds all religious persecution since the first century. Do what Christ would do. Be His hands, feet and heart in the Middle East and elsewhere. Make a difference with your prayers and commitment for religious freedom for all peoples and nations. Be Christ for others.

For this we pray through the power of the Passion, Cross and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ now and forever. Lord, come to the assistance of your people. In your mercy hear our prayers. Amen

The Intercession of Saint Claire

Feast of Saint Claire - "God of mercy, You inspired Saint Clare with the love of poverty. By the help of her prayers may we follow Christ in poverty of spirit and come to the joyful vision of Your glory in the Kingdom of heaven. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen."

Saint Claire would often counsel her sisters: "Gaze upon Him, consider Him, contemplate Him, as you desire to imitate Him." May her prayers assist all those in most need, and especially those discerning God's will and their vocation to religious life. Amen

Life at Conception Act

Washington, DC - Please join us as we pray for the Sanctity of Life. We believe life begins at conception and that abortion takes the life of an innocent human being. We believe it is the duty of our government to protect life as a right guaranteed to all citizens under the Constitution. For this reason, the Life at Conception Act was introduced on March 14, 2013. This bill would extend the Constitutional protection of life to the unborn from the time of conception.

It is unconscionable that any government would facilitate the taking of innocent life and we support all legislation that would end abortion or lead us in the direction of ending abortion. There are many ways we can work toward this ultimate goal, one of them being prayer. Let us pray that any federal funding of abortion is stopped and all tax dollars to groups who perform or advocate abortion will be blocked.

In May 2013, Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Representative Christopher Smith (R-N.J.) introduced the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (S.946/H.R.3). This bill would prohibit any funds authorized or appropriated by federal law to pay for any abortion or health benefits coverage that includes coverage of abortion.

Let us save millions of lives in the near future by encouraging all states to pass their own anti-abortion laws. If states were able to do so, hundreds of thousands of lives would be saved. Before 1973, abortion was illegal in most states. Since Roe v. Wade, over 50 million children have died in abortion procedures.

By our prayers let us strongly support legislation restricting federal courts from hearing cases like Roe v. Wade. Such legislation would only require a majority vote, making it more likely to pass than a pro-life constitutional amendment.

Let us pray that the Life at Conception Act is fully recognized in our Nation, in our States, in our homes and in each soul.

Mary, Mother of all Life and Champion of the Unborn, pray for us and all those who wish to destroy life in any form. Amen

More Ways to be Happy and Full of Joy

VATICAN CITY - Slowing down, being generous and fighting for peace are part of Pope Francis' secret recipe for happiness.

In an interview published in part in the Argentine weekly "Viva" July 27, Pope Francis listed his Top tips for bringing greater joy to one's life:

1. "Live and let live." "Move forward and let others do the same."

2. "Be giving of yourself to others." People need to be open and generous toward others."

3. "Proceed calmly" in life. Cultivate the ability to move with kindness and humility, which foster a calmness in life."

4. Develop and maintain "a healthy sense of leisure" through the pleasures of art, literature and playing together with children". "Consumerism has brought us anxiety" and stress, causing people to lose a "healthy culture of leisure." People must set aside time to play with their children.

Families must also turn off the TV when they sit down to eat so communication can happen.

5. Sundays should be holidays. "Sunday is for family," he said.

6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs. It's not enough to give people food, he shared. Dignity is given to others when they can bring food home from one's own labor.

7. Respect and take care of nature. Avoid environmental degradation.

8. Stop being negative. "Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy."

9. Respect others' beliefs. We can inspire others through our witness so that we grow together through dialogue and communication.

10. Work for peace. ..."Peace is always proactive" and dynamic. Pope Francis also stressed the importance of helping immigrants.

11. Help others. Domestic workers' rights should be recognized and protected, he said. "They must never be exploited or mistreated." "May we be always more grateful for the help of domestic workers and caregivers; theirs is a precious service."
