A 16 year old Head Wound Victim in PA

Pittsburgh, PA - A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition today after being shot in the head in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Police said the boy was in the garage of a home in the 300 block of Schooner Way around 9 p.m. Tuesday when a suspect shot him through an open side door facing the street.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said the suspect fled the scene and was not located by responding officers.

Investigators are following leads and speaking with witnesses in the area but the suspect has not yet been found or identified.

Police said the shooting victim is known to associate with a local gang and has had prior contact with the Police Department.

The residents inside the home where the shooting occurred appear to have been the intended targets, police said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Pittsburgh police at (925) 427-7369.

Lord, please bless all souls who are victims of being at the wrong place at the wrong time; victims of war, genocide, religious persecution and abuse. Bless those who are suffering because of violence and abuse as innocent bystanders.

Lord, please protect all souls in need of divine protection and deliverance from harm due to unknown circumstance. Protect especially all women and children exploited or harmed in anyway because of violence, neglect or greed. Let your perpetual light shine on all those suffering this day. Reveal your divine healing and glory and be a source of comfort and mercy to those in most need of your Divine Love. In Jesus' name we pray: Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Amen.

Ebola Victims and Health Care Workers

Atlanta - With the death of the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, as well as its first transmissions in this country, concern about the deadly virus is growing.

"We have to be really careful not to let fear take hold of us..." reflects Nancy Writebol, Ebola survivor.

The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with other groups to clear up myths and quiet fears about the spread of Ebola in the U.S.

The numbers are staggering! At least 8,033 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola and more than 4,000 have died, according to the World Health Organization. The WHO notes that these figures underestimate the true scope of the outbreak, as overwhelmed responders fall behind in their ability to report cases. Health care workers also continue to fall ill: 232 of the 401 health workers stricken by Ebola in West Africa have died.

The spread of the virus to the U.S. can be cause for alarm, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Thomas Frieden reassures us, "There are protocols in place to stop Ebola."

"The existence of the first case of Ebola spread in the U.S. changes some things and it doesn't change some things," Frieden said on Oct. 13. "It doesn't change the fact that we know how Ebola spreads. It doesn't change the fact that it's possible to treat Ebola safely. But it does change substantially how we approach it."

Lord, help all Ebola patients with your healing love and comfort. Grant eternal rest to those who have died or will die in the future and bless all researchers, health care givers and those providing intervention support. Grant them divine protection, intervention and deliverance as they strive to bring your healing and providential care to the sick and the dying of all those suffering with the disease.

Lord, grant enduring faith, hope and charity to all nations battling this disease and inspire all peoples to pray and be generous with their resources for those involved in this tragic epidemic. Help us remember your promises of eternal salvation and eternal life, which await us all in the life yet to come. Let charity not fear inspire our response to life's many critical challenges.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help pray for us and all those who need our prayers. May God's perfect will be done in our lives. May all that we suffer in this life be used for the good of souls in this life and the next. Amen

The Importance of Family Life

Please join us as we pray for family life and meditate on five quotes of Pope Francis:

Thursday, July 25, Address to Community of Varginha: "Dear friends, it is certainly necessary to give bread to the hungry - this is an act of justice. But there is also a deeper hunger, the hunger for a happiness that only God can satisfy, the hunger for dignity. There is neither real promotion of the common good nor real human development when there is ignorance of the fundamental pillars that govern a nation, its non-material goods: life, which is a gift of God, a value always to be protected and promoted; the family, the foundation of coexistence and a remedy against social fragmentation; integral education, which cannot be reduced to the mere transmission of information for the purposes of generating profit; health, which must seek the integral well-being of the person, including the spiritual dimension, essential for human balance and healthy coexistence; security, in the conviction that violence can be overcome only by changing human hearts."

Friday, July 26, Angelus: "How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith! Speaking about family life, I would like to say one thing: today, as Brazil and the Church around the world celebrate this feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents Day is also being celebrated. How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society! How important it is to have inter-generational exchanges and dialogues, especially within the context of the family."

Saturday, July 27, Interview on Radio Catedral of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro: "Not only would I say that the family is important for the evangelization of the new world. The family is important, and it is necessary for the survival of humanity. Without the family, the cultural survival of the human race would be at risk. The family, whether we like it or not, is the foundation."

Sunday, July 28, Address to the World Youth Day Volunteers: "God calls you to make definitive choices, and he has a plan for each of you: to discover that plan and to respond to your vocation is to move forward toward personal fulfillment. God calls each of us to be holy, to live his life, but he has a particular path for each one of us. Some are called to holiness through family life in the sacrament of Marriage. Today, there are those who say that marriage is out of fashion. Is it out of fashion? In a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, many preach the importance of 'enjoying' the moment. They say that it is not worth making a life-long commitment, making a definitive decision, 'for ever', because we do not know what tomorrow will bring. I ask you, instead, to be revolutionaries, I ask you to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love. I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage 'to swim against the tide'. And also have the courage to be happy."

Number 5: Sunday, July 28, Address to the Bishops of Brazil: "In mission, also on a continental level, it is very important to reaffirm the family, which remains the essential cell of society and the Church; young people, who are the face of the Church's future; women, who play a fundamental role in passing on the faith and who are a daily source of strength in a society that carries this faith forward and renews it."

Lord, inspire the Synod of Bishops with your wisdom and grace to lead all nations and peoples into a new era of evangelization that promotes respect for family life within the Church and throughout the world. Amen

Father Benedict Groeschel, Age 81, Eternal Rest

NEW YORK Franciscan Father Benedict Joseph Groeschel, well-known preacher and a founder of the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, died on Friday at age 81, after an extended illness.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Father Benedict. He was an example to us all, said Father John Paul Ouellette, community servant of the Friars of the Renewal, in a statement.

His fidelity and service to the Church and commitment to our Franciscan way of life will have a tremendous impact for generations to come.

Father Groeschel was a founder, author, teacher, preacher and retreat master. He hosted and appeared on EWTN television shows for more than 25 years. He was ordained a priest in 1959 for the Detroit Capuchin province, and held a masters degree in counseling and a doctoral degree in psychology.

In 1987, Father Groeschel and seven other Capuchin friars founded the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in New York City. He was director of Trinity Retreat House in Larchmont, N.Y., and also taught pastoral psychology for many years at St. Josephs Seminary in Dunwoodie, N.Y.

He founded St. Francis House and Good Counsel Homes and served as chaplain at Childrens Village in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for 14 years.

Father Groeschel is survived by his sister, Marjule Drury, several nieces and nephews, as well as 115 brothers and priests and 31 sisters of the Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Eternal Rest grant unto to him, oh Lord and may your perpetual light shine upon him now and forever. Amen

Success of the Synod of Bishops on Family Life

ROME - An unmistakable air of expectation mixed with uncertainty pervaded the atmosphere here as Pope Francis prepared to open in early October his global meeting of Catholic bishops to discuss issues of contemporary family life.

As of now, nearly every aspect of how the event will unfold is unclear - from how delicate questions like divorce and remarriage will be handled, to how much discussion will be allowed, to even if it will be known who is speaking each day inside the closed-door Oct. 5-19 Synod of Bishops.

But the one prelate who is chiefly responsible for shepherding the process said Wednesday that at least one thing is clear: The coming days would see an "opportunity to deal with existential issues," both for individual families and for the Catholic church at large.

The theme is "the pastoral challenges of the family in the context of Evangelization," and synod members will be called upon to find ways to improve the pastoral application of church teachings, ways to explain it, and ways to help Catholics live it.

During their discussions, the bishops are going to attempt "to respond to the new challenges of the family, starting from the family as the main cell of society and the domestic church for Christians," said Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri.

The event, one of many hosted in early October by diverse interest groups hoping to have impact on the synod discussions, focused on presenting viewpoints of accomplished women of faith from around the globe regarding struggles stemming from changes in family life.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Holy Family of Nazareth, pray for all families and the success of the Synod of Bishops dealing with family issues and the role of the new Evangelization. May God's perfect will be done at home, in our Nation and throughout the Universal Church. Amen

A Morning Prayer by Saint Therese

A MORNING PRAYER WRITTEN BY ST. THERESE

O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to Its infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of Its Merciful Love.

O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear, the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day be united together in heaven for all Eternity.

Amen.
